First off, I have to say that Kate and Nick are two of the sweetest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Their love is magical and it instantly fills any room these two walk into. Nick Harmer is the bass player for a little band you may have heard of, called Death Cab for Cutie. Working on their wedding was a designers dream. Kate is an amazing graphic designer and she came to me with their gorgeous color palette, stunning iconic stationery that she had poured her soul into, a beautiful vision of succulents, white cakes and milk jugs with swirly straws. I worked with them in the months before the wedding to pull all of the details together and to help them incorporate and layout the many elements into their rustic Sodo Park venue. Sarah Rhoads did an exceptional job of capturing the beauty and whimsy of Kate & Nick, along with the ambiance at the wedding which was truly mesmerizing. Tiffany Lowry, who always blows me away with her talents, did a stunning job on hair and makeup.

Kate and Nick’s ceremony was a tear jerker. It included a candlelight vigil during their vows, a duet by Nick’s Death Cab for Cutie band mate, Ben Gibbard and his wife Zooey Deschanel of She & Him, as well as a moving performance by Chris Pierce. The ceremony was officiated by Kate & Nick’s good friend and fellow musician, John Roderick. Sodo Park was so full of love that I don’t doubt all of Seattle felt a little bit sweeter that night. The admiration of their family and friends was overflowing during the hilarious, moving, kind toasts that were given to the couple. Just one of many, many highlights of Kate & Nick’s wedding…

A Sugarcomb Halloween Wedding | Marissa & Andrew

Marissa and Andrew knew early on in their engagement that they were destined for a spectacular Halloween wedding. They chose a warm color palette and a rustic, weathered venue, Sodo Park, that was perfect for a mild Fall day in Seattle. Their wedding day was cold as expected, but turned out sunny and gorgeous although heavy rain had been in the forecast. The majority of their guests were visiting from out-of-town and got to see our city at it's Fall best. After a beautiful ceremony and dinner, The Michael Benson Band put on a spectacular performance and Marissa & Andrew's candy-filled guests packed the dance floor for hours.

Forest and I were on the Oregon Coast this weekend and we got to spend a day at Cannon Beach, one of our favorite places. It's where Forest asked me to marry him, and we've made a tradition of going back every year since. The weather never got above the 60's but it's such a beautiful place to see.

Sugarcomb Wedding | Danell & Chris

Chris asked Danell to marry him half way down a ski slope! :)

They live in Colorado and ventured back to Danell's home town for their wedding. On a warm sunny day, they married at St. Joseph, (my favorite church in Seattle, can you guess why?), and had their reception at Pike Place's Top of the Market. Full of personality, their wedding included a vibrant color palette and an ecstatic gathering of family and friends who danced through the night. My favorite parts: bridesmaids who changed from pink pumps to pink flip-flops at the reception, burgers at Dick's Drive-In, and a deliciously sweet ice cream bar!

Wedding Design Tip | Tell a Visual Story

Planning a wedding can easily turn into a shopping spree. "I love this and this and this...!" It's so easy to do, you pick everything you fall in love with: dresses, shoes, invitations, linens, decor, etc. When you take a step back and look at all of your choices as a whole, as they will be seen on your wedding day, do they all tell the same story? Not everything has to match, but in order to throw a wedding that visually captures your guests and could be wedding blog or magazine-worthy, the design must be consistent. You should be able to hold any of your choices up to another and they should make the same statement. Telling a story is a phrase I've heard countless times as a designer; it's like a theme, but more so, it portrays a feeling in a moment. It visually tells viewers about a person, a time, a place and an emotion, without speaking a single word. It is the easiest way to captivate an audience, to throw a wedding that becomes known for it's details, and to help you keep your choices manageable as you plan your big day.

August 2nd, two sweet years ago, was our wedding. It's hard to believe it's been that long since I was running around with my own planning binder. Even harder to believe that I've been married to my better-half (no joke) for that long.

Weekly, I can count on at least one person telling me that my husband is the nicest man they've ever met...and they're completely right. I'm not sure how I found him (joke), but every ounce of me could not be more happy that I did.

Like Cake | My Favorite Things

I've had a long running obsession with anything that resembles a delicious frosted cake. Typically it's architecture, I love buildings that look like you could walk up to them with a fork and take a bite. A perfect example is this photo of a white church that I keep above my desk in my office. My god-mother sent it to me from a vacation that she was on a couple of years ago...I can't wait to see it in person someday!

Wedding Design Tip | Setting up Reception Chairs

Most of us were well trained in childhood, parents and teachers telling us lovingly to “push in your chair!” When setting up a wedding reception, the chairs can easily become an afterthought, they get spread evenly around to their tables and forgotten about. One detail, that will make a tremendous difference in the look of the reception, is to not push in the chairs. This applies, for the most part, to tables with floor length table linens, but should apply to uncovered tables as well. Slide the chair up to the point where it is just barely about to touch the hanging table linen and stop. This way, it doesn’t make a dent in the fabric and the lines of your table look clean, finished, picture perfect and ready for your guests.

Wedding Design Tip | Floor Length Table Linens

Unless you are using gorgeous wood tables or unique pieces of furniture that you want to show off, I can't stress how much floor length table linens will add to the ambiance in a wedding reception. The extra length is great for many reasons:

adds drama
hides unattractive metal table legs
fills space with something elegant where you would otherwise see the floor
gives a more clean, finished and thought-out look
adds visual weight to the lower half of the table {This is important. We spend so much time figuring out what the table-top will look like that it's easy to forget to visually balance the second half of the table. With a floor length linen, the fabric, which has a strong visual weight, is "supporting" your display up top and creates a more consistent statement.}

Another option is to order an even larger table linen, which creates "pools" of fabric on the floor. We see this all the time with window drapes. It adds drama and can be very elegant when the right fabric is used in the right situation. For example, certain fabrics pool better than others, silk or taffeta is better than cotton, and it will generally look better on hardwood floors, rather than carpeting.

Always test your table design plan beforehand so you know what to expect on your wedding day! Your linen provider should be happy to help you do this.

This rich classic palette started with the luxurious bridesmaid dress. At $7,660, the Oscar de la Renta black sequin embroidered lace dress is a show stopper! Of course, unless you are planning your wedding with lottery winnings, it may be a bit of a stretch. Considering it an inspiration piece, the ideas in this palette can be recreated on a budget. I'm picturing a summer afternoon on a grassy tree lined field. A canopy of black, ivory and white lace umbrellas hang from the branches above, they form an imaginary room and offer your guests shade from the sun. Pops of red and deep coral warm up the cool ivory and solid black staples.

Behind the Scenes | Punch Bowl Flower Arrangement

I'm still a little obsessed with the flower our arrangement from the ABC/ISES event last week. (See yesterday's blog post for more info.) It was put together by the talented Meghan Stoller of MUM Floral Design. I'm so excited to see more of her work at the weddings we are working on together this Summer! We started out with our design, a trip to the floral wholesaler and a giant silver punch bowl. The flowers used were gorgeous carmel garden roses, white roses, ranunculus and hydrangea. Meghan brought andromeda that was from her own garden. Here are the photos of the arrangement coming together...enjoy!

Wedding Sugar Palette #1004 | Barely Metallic

I'm writing this on a beautiful day, the sun is pouring in through the window on to my desk. What a perfect time of year. This color palette is very exciting in that it is the first I'm publishing (aside from real weddings) that I've had the chance to take from color palette, to inspiration board to an actual table-scape.

This was created for the annual Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) / International Special Events Society (ISES) Table Top Design Competition which made for a wonderful day this past Monday. Meghan Stoller from MUM Floral Design put together a stunning punch-bowl flower arrangement for the table.

Inspired by bare tones of gold and cream, this color palette is easy on the eyes and intriguing to guests. Hints of lavish sparkle round off this luxurious wedding design.

The elegant neutrals become the palettes strongest color tones while black acts as the bold base that grounds the concept. This palette is for a bride and groom who have a flair for bold choices like a silver bridal gown and abalone chandeliers, and who want a timeless theme with modern glamor.

Pink has been a popular wedding color for ages. Lately the pink and chocolate brown trend may be what comes to mind. Here is an elegant way to use the girly color in a way that makes a slightly different statement. Thinking Outside of the {SHOE} Box.

If you search for Bridal Shoes online, you will find pages and pages of stores that specialize in various classic styles of white silk and satin shoes. Just pick your style and your size and in 7-10 days it's all yours. Bam, done, cross it off your list of things to do. Why has this become the standard? Let's apply a valuable lesson we learned in grade school and think outside of the box. Bridal footwear options have come a long way since my mom wore bright white polyester platform pumps on her wedding day. Have some fun with it!

With the right pair of shoes, a bride can express her sense of style through its shape, color and embellishments. The added bonus is that you get to walk away {pun intended} from the best day of your life with a fabulous pair of shoes that will continue along your journey with you.

My own wedding shoes were a pair of Loeffler Randall peep-toes in baby-pink metallic leather and I've worn them quite a few times since our big day. Yes, they were an investment piece, but I still love them as much, if not more, than I did at our wedding. Their timeless style and craftsmanship will carry on for years to come and how great is it that I can reach for that box in my closet and wear them out to dinners, events or even our anniversary? Ooh, I should wear them on Valentines Day this weekend!

Now, yes, I'm a sucker for an expensive shoe {I can't help it, they're drawn to me}, but there are plenty of budget-friendly, stylish choices out there that would be great alternatives to a classic bridal shoe. Leather, feathers, tulle, crystals, booties or bows; jewel tone, pastel, saturated color, even black; there are hundreds of stunning options that will add a unique quality to your bridal fashion statement. Explore your options before you check this one off your list!

Wedding Sugar Palette #1002 | Outstanding Orange

I love orange, a lot of people love orange, but it is one high maintenance color! Easy to misuse, complicated to blend, quick to overwhelm. So, what is one to do who must have orange in their wedding? The key is to make it work with your palette, rather than against it. Orange is best used with equally warm neutrals. A warm cream and toasty charcoal are the perfect pair to tone down the powerful color and let it stand out as a beautiful pop of energy.

Below is my compilation of items that fit this perfect palette. Flirty bridesmaids dresses, a fun Swarovski goldfish bracelet, and the star of the show is the amazingly flirty and fun Badgley Mischka ruffle flower t-strap sandal on the bottom right. Delicious!

Planning Your Wedding | The First Decision

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching and the holidays behind us, the newly (and nearly) engaged are everywhere! If you’re one of them, one of those grand moments is occurring in your life. I’m guessing you’ve found it’s followed by a whirlwind, right? The excitement, telling your friends and family, showing off the ring, the questions everyone is asking about your wedding plans, the advice coming from every direction. Where do you start? Not all brides have one of those notorious wedding binders they made when they were 8 years old, full of bits and pieces of their dream wedding, photos, fabrics and inspiration that they added over the years. What most of us do is get anxious and want to jump into making lots of major decisions at once. Choosing the date, finding your location(s), picking colors, choosing flowers, ordering the cake, signing a photographer and committing yourself to things because they’re available is common, but maybe they don’t feel quite right because you can’t see the overall picture yet. Sound familiar?

Here is the best advice I can give to a newly engaged girl: “Slow down! Enjoy where you are at in life for a few quiet moments. Start gathering inspiration from wedding magazines’ and websites. Then, before you do anything else, make an appointment at a bridal gown boutique.”

If you’ve done it before you know that trying on wedding dresses is an experience like no other. The usual rules of fashion go completely out the window. What you walk in liking is very rarely what you leave with. For example, I went in with planning to find a light and airy halter gown and went home with a lush silk strapless drop waist gown. I know my body and what kinds of clothes fit me the best, but this isn’t like prom dress shopping, ladies. Saying that bridal fashion is a whole other world is not an exaggeration. The perfect wedding dress finds you. You need to go in with an open mind, and trust your gut. The reason I advise this as your first big wedding decision is because you never know what kind of dress you will fall in love with.

A wedding is made up of many elements that come together to form one grand event. Common with any type of design, if you want a flawless final product, all of the elements should mesh well together, be consistent and complimentary to one another. Finding out what type of gown is going to make you feel like a gorgeous bride is the perfect first puzzle piece in this journey of decisions. It is something solid you can use to base the remaining decisions off of. The formality of your gown can assist you in what direction you should go with your venue and beyond. If you fall in love with an elaborately adorned couture ball gown, there are venues that dress will look better in than others, like a ball room glistening with over-sized chandeliers. If you fall in love with a flowy organic cotton v-neck gown, it’s just begging to be worn in a relaxed outdoor wedding or a rustic airy space. If you want advice on all of the following decisions you need to make, just ask your dress! It should be a reflection of yourself; it is one of the few elements of the wedding (along with your groom, your guest-book and gifts) that you will still be able to hold onto after the wedding. It’s one of those things that a girl will love forever; it is the perfect jumping off point in an amazing journey ahead of you. So, slow down…and make an appointment at a bridal gown boutique. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

Wedding Sugar Palette #1001 | Spring Fashion Inspiration

As a designer, I find inspiration everywhere. One of my favorite things to do is flip though the latest runway shows on style.com. I get crazy inspired by the latest shows; the textures, the colors, the hairstyles. On a recent drool-fest through the Sonia Rykiel Spring 2010 RTW show pictures knew I had to make a color palette out of a few of my favorite shots. The muted lilac, vibrant citrus and pops of bold, saturated colors are so rich and would look delicious whether in your closet, living room or at your wedding. Yum!

LIFE SHIFTED.

This past weekend, I had the immense pleasure of attending MTH2010, a wedding industry workshop, also known as the Making Things Happen intensive. It is the brain child of the magical Lara Casey {Editor in Chief of Southern Wedding's Magazine, Owner of Bliss Event Group, Owner of Lara Casey Reps} and the brilliant photographer Jeff Holt.

I walked in not knowing what to expect, just hoping that like the past attendees, I would walk out with a very powerful energy and a new outlook on my business and life. It was honest, challenging, emotional and revealing. The Seattle group laid it all out on the table, from our greatest fears to our deepest strengths. We figured out what drags each of us down and what fires each of us up. We determined our goals and set plans in motion to make each one of them happen. I am so grateful to have attended and to have been among many greats in the industry. I feel a positive change in my thinking and in the future of my life and business. Life shifted.

My favorite part of the workshop was when we were asked to write down our life's purpose. Normally that type of question would stop me in my tracks, but I was inspired and my mind was clear, the words flowed instinctivly from my pen to my paper:

To learn as much about life, human behavior and the world as I can.
To help others bring order to their chaos, bring peace to their minds and create calm for them to carry forward with.

I've been living with that purpose my whole life, I just never realized it until Saturday. What is your life's purpose?

Wedding Sugar Palette # 0905 | Pink Wishes

Today's colors were inspired by the memorable day I spent with my family yesterday. Every year my husband and I venture out with my parents to buy our Christmas trees. Last year, I believe it took us about 6 tree lots before my mom and I found 2 trees that weren't too full, too bottom heavy, too top heavy, too wimpy, too greenish-yellow, etc, etc. This year we found our perfect trees at the first lot we looked in, which I am positive is a Christmas miracle.

My Grandma found a few boxes of her old ornaments for us to look through and inside we found the most magnificent jumbo size vintage pink mercury glass Christmas tree balls. Thus began my obsession with making our tree a bubblegum pink ode to Grandma. It is adorable!

Before any of the tree shopping (tree criticizing) started, we kicked off the day with family brunch, and when it's a holiday, that always means Gin Fizzes. Heard of them? Because it's better than a Bloody Mary with your morning meal and I'm a die-hard Bloody Mary fan. A Gin Fizz is creamy-lemony-frothy goodness. Here's the recipe if anyone is curious. (Always drink responsibly, and don't let the eggs scare you!) Mix all of this in a blender:

Christmas tree lots are popping up all over town right now. There is something about that rich green color that makes me so happy, no matter what time of year it is. Because it is such a powerful color, I paired our green with a few subtle pastels that would add much needed splashes of lighthearted color throughout a wedding. I would love to see this palette in a December reception, with bold green taffeta or silk table linens, silver vases filled with lush white bouquets, the tables glowing with gorgeous Glassybaby votives in an icy aqua color they call Cashmere. Sweet wintery perfection...

Lately, I've given a lot of thought as to what I can contribute to the wedding and events community through my blog, and have come up with a colorful solution! This morning, I'm very pleased to post the premier of "Sugar Palettes". Each week, I will post a fresh new palette, specific to the time of year, the season and constantly evolving inspirations.

"Fall-ternative."

We are well into Fall in Seattle. Although I'm happy to pull out my sweaters and warm slippers after a really hot summer, I usually can't wait to get through these cold seasons and back to Spring again. When we think of Fall, it is so typical to envision a plethora of pumpkin oranges and yellows, brown leaves and dark reds. This palette above is my take on a softer side of the season. Growing up near the water, one of the first things you see when Fall hits is how dark the water gets before a good storm. I chose that deep sea blue as my starting point for this palette. To keep things warm I added a pale gold. This could be bridesmaids shoes, table linens and glistening flickering candelabras. I added a cool ballet pink for contrast and a warm cloudy off-white to ground the colors with. This would make for a comforting and elegant fall wedding, out of the box, but definitely not out of style.

Getting married is an incredible milestone in your life. It might feel surreal, like you're in a dream you always knew you'd have one day. You are excited about the love it represents and all of the family and friends that are here to support you. What you may not have expected is the new jobs you've just innocently accepted: CEO, Researcher and Receptionist of Your Very Own Wedding, Inc. Congrats!

Planning a wedding consists of blending thousands of smart decisions into one spectacular event. Hiring a planner is the easiest way to make that time a wonderful experience rather than a stress trigger. With a planner you can be as involved or uninvolved as you desire, it is still your big day and your vision, just less of a chore, blissful like you always dreamed. We all know there is no option to having a venue, a photographer, the dress, there's no question about it. Unfortunately, most people don't realize that a planner was just as much of a necessity, until it's too late -- it's your wedding day, and rather than sitting pretty in the makeup chair with a calm smile on your face, you, your bridesmaids and your mom are all on your phones, desperately trying to track down your missing veil, giving your lost florist directions, reminding your brother what time to show up at, all while hoping, praying, that the reception ends up looking at least somewhat like you wanted it to. It doesn't have to be like that, make the decision early that you are going to make this easy on yourself, let a planner do what we are good at, and relax. Enjoy your engagement!

Katie and Steve are a life-force of love. Katie was a dream to work with and I learned as much about myself as I did about her. She had a vision of what she wanted her wedding to be...seeing that girl's face, so happy and overwhelmed by everything that a year of hard work had become, it was hard not to want to cry tears of joy for her. I helped them plan their Seattle wedding while they were living in sunny Miami. These two were surrounded by the unbound support of hundreds of friends and family members. It was a day I will remember for a very long time. Thank you Katie and Steve for showing me exactly why I love doing this so much!

Yesterday, my grandparent's celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary. They were married on a Wednesday, a great day to Wed. She made her pale pink wedding gown and each of her bridesmaids dresses, and he made his tuxedo. My grandpa is a long ago retired custom tailor and my grandma, a seamstress. I wish I could bottle up all of their stories. They are nostalgia, they are magical. They are at that age when you cry because you remember something so sweet from so long ago.

My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary about a week ago...holy crap, we are barely at the beginning. :)
